About Us

Worcester sits under a 50 psf ground snow load. Boston sits at 40. Powersol Roofing is a Quincy company that runs crews west into Worcester County, and we spec every roof to the number your city actually uses, not the one the coast gets away with.

Our story

Based in Quincy. Working Worcester County.

We will tell you where we are before you ask. Powersol Roofing operates out of a fixed address at 100 Hancock St in Quincy, and we run crews west to Worcester. No storefront on Park Ave, no mailbox pretending to be an office. A real address you can drive to, 40 miles east.

Powersol started in 2020 with one truck and a bet that homeowners were tired of vague quotes and crews that vanish after the deposit clears. We built the company around the opposite: itemized written scopes in plain English, photos of everything we find, and a phone a person actually picks up.

Worcester is a different roof than the South Shore. Heavier snow load, more snowfall, and a housing stock full of three-deckers with low-slope porch sections that cannot take shingles. Everything below is the specific stuff we build to here. See what we handle across the city on our Worcester roofing services page.

The number nobody quotes

Why a Worcester roof needs more than a Boston spec

Worcester sits under a 50 psf ground snow load and averages 72.9 inches of snow a year. Boston sits at 40 psf and 49.2 inches. Quincy, where we are based, is also 40. That is a 25% heavier design load and roughly 48% more snowfall, 40 miles west.

The snow load number comes from Table R301.2(4) of the Massachusetts building code. Your building inspector uses it. Most roofing quotes never mention it.

What the gap does to a roof: snow sits longer on a Worcester roof than a coastal one. It melts off the warm middle of the roof, runs down to the cold overhang, and refreezes. Do that enough times and you have a dam at the eave with standing water behind it. The water goes sideways and up, under the shingles, into the deck. That is the failure mode here. Not wind, not hail. Ice at the eave.

Older Worcester housing stock makes it worse. Under-insulated attics and knee walls put more heat on the roof deck, which speeds up the melt-freeze cycle.

What we build to

Three Things a Worcester Roof Needs That a Quote Rarely Names

The ice barrier dimension

Massachusetts requires an ice barrier running from the lowest roof edge to at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line. On any roof pitched 8:12 or steeper it has to run at least 36 inches measured from the eave edge. That is 780 CMR R905.1.2, Ninth Edition.

Most quotes say “ice and water shield included.” That is a product category, not a spec. Ask for the dimension in inches and whether it is measured from the eave edge or from inside the wall line. On a 2-foot overhang those are different amounts of material, and that is where a cheap number quietly gets cheap.

Three-deckers are two roofs

A Worcester three-decker is usually a pitched main roof plus flat or low-slope sections over the rear porches and additions. Those low-slope sections cannot take shingles. They need a membrane, EPDM or TPO, seamed and flashed as its own system.

Plenty of quotes price the whole building as shingles. Then the porch roof leaks in year two and nobody is sure whose problem it is. Three stories also means staging and fall protection, which belongs on the scope as a line item, not buried.

The full GAF system

One system, named component by component. GAF WeatherWatch Ice and Water Leak Barrier at the eaves, FeltBuster Synthetic Roofing Felt across the field, Pro-Start Starter Strip at eaves and rakes, Timberline HDZ Architectural Shingles, Cobra SnowCountry or RidgeRunner Ridge Vent, Seal-A-Ridge Ridge Cap.

Cobra SnowCountry is the one that matters here. It is the higher-profile ridge vent built to keep working with snow sitting on the ridge, which on a 72-inch-a-year roof is most of the winter. See it specified on a full new roof installation in Worcester.

Who you are hiring

Owner-Run, and Still Here Next Winter

Manuel Reynoso, who goes by Manny, owns Powersol Solutions LLC and runs Powersol Roofing. He is on the estimates. His approach, in his words: tell the homeowner the truth, show them photos, explain the options, and make sure the job gets done the right way.

That matters more in Worcester than in a lot of places. After a storm, Central Massachusetts gets worked by out-of-state crews doing free inspections and same-day contracts. Massachusetts does not recognize out-of-state contractor licenses. A truck with an out-of-state plate and a magnetic sign is not licensed here, and if the job goes wrong you have no state backstop. That is why we document storm damage roof repair in Worcester with photographs before anybody signs anything.

We are not the right fit for everybody. If the only thing that matters is the cheapest number, we would rather say so now. We will not tell you your roof is free, will not promise your insurance carrier will approve anything, will not waive your deductible, and will not leave out flashing, ventilation or tear-off to make a number look better than someone else’s. If a repair fixes it, we tell you to repair it, even though a replacement pays us more.

How to Check Any Worcester Roofer in About 10 Minutes

1. HIC registration

Residential work on existing owner-occupied 1 to 4 unit homes requires Home Improvement Contractor registration with the state. Check a registration on Mass.gov. No registration, no Guaranty Fund protection.

2. Construction Supervisor License

Separate credential, separate lookup. Massachusetts requires a licensed construction supervisor or a registered design professional to oversee construction on 1- and 2-family homes and on buildings under 35,000 cubic feet. Most homeowners think HIC and CSL are the same thing. They are not.

3. The Guaranty Fund

Win a judgment or arbitration award against a registered contractor and fail to collect, and the state fund can reimburse your actual loss up to $25,000. You have 7 years from the award to file, and you have to show reasonable collection efforts first. Hire an unregistered contractor and this does not exist for you.

4. Where the license was issued

Massachusetts does not recognize out-of-state contractor licenses. A crew that rolled in after a storm holding a license from another state is not licensed to do your roof, whatever the door hanger says.

5. The permit

Full tear-offs that expose the deck need a building permit from the Worcester Department of Inspectional Services, 25 Meade Street, 508-799-1198, weekdays 8:00am to 4:30pm. Ask who is pulling it. Overlay-only work may be exempt, but the code caps a roof at two layers total.

6. Ask us the same questions

Run every check above on Powersol before you hire us. We would rather you verify than take our word for it. Start with a documented roof inspection in Worcester and compare our findings against a second opinion.

Straight answers

What Worcester Homeowners Ask Us First

Do I actually need a full replacement, or can this be repaired?

Depends what is failing. A flashing detail, a pipe boot, or one damaged section usually holds with a repair. Granule loss across the whole field, or soft decking in more than one place, means a repair is work you pay for twice. We photograph it and show you which one you are looking at. If it is the first, book a roof repair in Worcester and keep the rest of the roof.

How long does the job take?

Most standard replacements go on in 1 to 2 days once material is on site and the weather holds. Our average is usually one day. Three-decker jobs with membrane sections and staging run longer.

What shingle are you putting on?

GAF Timberline HDZ architectural shingles, as part of the full GAF system above. Not a builder-grade 3-tab.

What happens if you find rotted wood after the tear-off?

We photograph it, show you, and agree the scope of the decking replacement before it goes in. It is the most common surprise on an older Worcester roof and it should not be a surprise to you.

Do I need a permit for a roof in Worcester?

For a full tear-off that exposes the deck, yes. From Inspectional Services at 25 Meade Street. Overlay-only work may be exempt, but you are capped at two layers total, so on most Worcester houses the honest answer is a tear-off and a permit.

What is the ice barrier requirement in Massachusetts?

From the lowest roof edge to at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line, in self-adhering polymer-modified bitumen or two cemented layers of underlayment. On an 8:12 pitch or steeper, at least 36 inches from the eave edge. 780 CMR R905.1.2.

Can I finance the work?

Financing is available through approved partners. Terms depend on you, your credit, and the lender’s current program, so we will get you a real answer rather than post one we cannot guarantee you will get.

Will insurance cover this?

Sometimes. We inspect for storm, wind and hail damage, photograph what we find, and tell you whether it reads as real damage or normal wear. If you open a claim we provide documentation and meet the adjuster. We will not promise an approval and we will not tell you to file if the damage is not there. Your deductible is yours.
