Straight answers about New England roofs.

A roof is a decision most homeowners make only a couple of times in a lifetime, usually under pressure. These guides exist so you can make it with confidence: how Massachusetts weather wears on a roof year after year, how to spot trouble while it’s still small, and when a simple repair makes more sense than a full replacement.

Why this blog exists

This blog is our way of helping you take good care of your home, whether or not you ever call us. It’s where we share the answers we already give homeowners on the phone every week: the early signs your roof could use a little attention, how to get ready for storm season, which roofing materials hold up beautifully in coastal weather, and what to look for when choosing a roofer you can trust.

Every guide is written by people who spend their days on South Shore roofs. You’ll find practical tips you can act on the same day, clear explanations of when a simple repair is all you need, and the many benefits of doing a job right the first time. And when something truly depends on your specific house, we’re always happy to come take a look and answer it for you in person, free of charge.

And if you’d rather talk than read, we’d love to help you directly. Call (617) 631-5435 and a real person from Quincy picks up, nights and weekends included. You can also browse what we do or meet the crew first.

It ends with six warning signs you can check today without a ladder, from granules in the gutters to a wavy ridge line, plus an honest explanation of when it’s time to bring in a professional.

Emergency

Water is coming in right now

Move anything electrical away from the drip, put a container under it, and call (617) 631-5435. The line is answered around the clock, including nights and nor’easters. We tarp and stabilize the roof the same day, then schedule the permanent repair once things dry out. Take photos of everything for your insurer, and we’ll help with the rest.

Planning ahead

My roof is getting old and I want a plan

Book a free estimate. The visit takes about an hour: we walk the roof, check the attic, photograph what we find, and leave you a written scope. No pressure and no obligation. You’ll know exactly where your roof stands, whether a repair buys you time, and how long you can safely wait before deciding anything.

After a storm

A nor’easter just came through

Don’t climb up to check it yourself. Request a free storm inspection instead. We photograph any damage, tell you honestly whether it’s worth an insurance claim, and meet your adjuster on site if it is. Wind damage likes to hide at flashing, ridge caps, and the slopes you can’t see from the driveway.

Second opinion

Another roofer quoted me and it felt off

Before you sign anything, get a free second opinion. We inspect the same roof, show you photos of what we actually find, and tell you plainly whether the work in that quote is needed. If their price and scope were fair, we’ll say so. If they weren’t, you’ll know before it costs you.

Quick answers

The six questions homeowners ask before they call.

Do you charge for estimates or inspections?
No. The estimate visit is free and takes about an hour. We walk the roof if it’s safe, photograph what we find, check the attic for ventilation and moisture, and leave you a written scope. You keep the photos and the report whether you hire us or not. They’re useful even if you collect three other quotes.
Can a roof be replaced in a Massachusetts winter?
Yes, and we install year-round. The one technical caveat: asphalt shingles have adhesive strips that need warmth to seal themselves, so on cold installs we hand-seal the tabs as we go. Winter can actually be a smart time to book, because schedules are lighter and lead times are shorter than in the spring rush.
Will you work with my insurance company?
We document the damage, meet your adjuster on site, and make sure the scope they approve matches what the roof actually needs. What we won’t do is play the games some storm-chasing outfits do, like offering to cover your deductible. That practice is insurance fraud in Massachusetts, and it should be a red flag whenever a contractor suggests it.
How fast can someone come out for an active leak?
The emergency line at (617) 631-5435 is answered around the clock, and tarp visits happen the same day, usually within hours. Stopping the water quickly protects the ceiling, insulation, and flooring underneath it. The permanent repair gets scheduled once the weather allows us to do it properly.
Do I need to be home for the estimate?
Only for part of it. The exterior inspection needs nobody home, but ten minutes of attic access improves the quality of a quote more than anything else we do. The attic is where ventilation problems, past leaks, and decking rot actually show. If your schedule is tight, we’ll do the roof first and time the attic check around you.
How long does a roof replacement take?
Most single-family homes are finished in one to two days once material arrives, weather permitting. Larger or steeper roofs can take longer, and we tell you that up front rather than surprising you mid-job. We protect the landscaping, haul away every scrap of debris, and sweep the property with magnets for stray nails before the crew leaves. You get warranty paperwork and photo documentation when the job is done.
